Rail Budget 2013-2014 : Highlights, New Trains, Breaking News, Updates. Plan panel chief Montek Singh Ahluwalia is believed to have discussed with Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal the issue of setting up of a Rail Tariff Authority to align fares and devise ways to infuse greater private investment in projects. Ahluwalia met Bansal at Rail Bhawan to outline the broad strategy for the Rail Budget to be presented in Parliament next month.

Industry body Assocham asked the government to further raise the rail passenger fares of to finance the huge investments required for modernisation and safety of Indian Railways.

In a first initiative of its kind, Indian Railways is likely to introduce Braille stickers in trains for visually-challenged passengers to facilitate their travel.

Faced with a mounting deficit of over Rs 20,000 crore in the passenger segment, the railways is keen on hiking passenger fares between 5-10 paise per km in the coming months to generate good revenue. Railfare Hike is bound to affect your travel Budget especially if you belong to middle class and lower middle class. Though the increase per kilometer has been 10 paisa at Maximum, this can mean a lot when the distance of the Journey is Long.
